I just realized one of my earlier thoughts on the lens was in error, it is not an adaptall/adaptall II mount as only Tamron has manufactured that to the best of my knowledge. It is a T4/TX mount, not sure exactly which one (I think TX mount). So the lens is still interchangeable between different cameras with the proper adapter

I just checked this morning, according to the serial number it was made by Tokina as it started with 37.

I also failed to mention, but this one has a built in lens hood. I have picture of it up here http://omexperience.wordpress.com/lenses/vivitar-300mm-f56/

thanks for letting me know. The Vivitar 300mm f/5.6 you have may be made by Tamron, since they make the adaptall. What is the serial number?

I found your great site a couple of weeks back, which got me interested in low cost telephoto lenses for my OM-1. I had been wanting to get a 300mm+ lens for sometime and I finally took the plunge.

I ended up getting the vivitar 300mm f/5.6 lens. It is however a much newer version then the t-mount version you have/reviewed. Its an adaptal/adaptal II version so it has automatic diaphram control. It is also significantly smaller and lighter then the t-mount version with a total length of 6" and a weight around 600 grams (its slightly longer, but lighter then my vivitar series 1 70-210 f/3.5). I am not sure about the weight of the T-mount version, but based on your photos I am guessing a total length in the range of 11-13".

I also managed to acquire it for a very low price (around $40) in excellent condition. The downside is there is no tripod collar, however the light weight and small size make it relatively easy to handhold. I failed to notice if it is multicoated or not, but I believe it is.

I also have no clue if this much later version is olympus made or not, but I suspect it is not. It looks somewhat similar to the Tamron Adaptal 300mm f/5.6, but it is deffinitely a different lens as the Tamron has 4 elements in 4 groups and has different focusing marks with a closer focus (about 8.5ft). The one I have appears to be 5 elements in 5 groups (hard to tell without disassembling it) and it has a minimum focusing mark of 20ft.

Anyway, I thought it was worthwhile to share about the updated vivitar 300mm f/5.6 as it also seems to be a great low budget telephoto lens. Hopefully it should also keep me tided over till I can afford a zuiko 300mm f/4.5. I may try to track down a Spiratone 400mm f/6.3 in the future.

Thanks!
